About two weeks ago I was going through the new shows on the CBS website when their classics column caught my attention. Down at the bottom of the list were two series that brought a smile to my face:
Twilight zone
Twin peaks
That moment I realized that although I had heard so much about them I had never actually watched any of the two (except that one episode of twin peaks about 4 years ago, that I only recently discovered was the pilot).
This is how it all went:
Half of the family is sitting on the couch, trying to pass the evening, when we decide to try this new technology that we had just installed, "digital terrestrial TV". So we switch it on and there we were, faced with this bizarre creation, that was obviously made for the telly, somehow reminding of Dynasty, but with a whole different kind of audience (I presume), kind of slow in action and yet so alluring and captivating.
This seduction that took place 4 years ago was what created my most recent David Lynch frenzy. The whole incident is a bit like this quote by Charles Bukowski: "We got cable TV here, and the first thing we switched on happened to be 'Eraserhead.' I said, 'Oh, this cable TV has opened up a whole new world. We're gonna be sitting in front of this thing for centuries. What next?' So starting with 'Eraserhead' we sit here, click, click, click—nothing."
I must admit that David Lynch is quite unique, but thankfully digital TV offers many other good alternatives to the classic -often trashy- TV (at least where I live). So as at that time I did not have the luxury to watch a daily series, Twin Peaks soon fell into oblivion. Now I feel the time has come to give Lynch the attention he deserves. After watching both seasons from Twin Peaks, I decided to take a tour through all his movies and start making the connections of the pieces that he has so meticulously spread throughout his works.
